Federer Gambling Favorite At Wimbledon Despite Slump
Roger Federer has been going through a slump the likes of which he has not experienced in his illustrious career. Despite that fact, he is the gambling favorite to win Wimbledon, which started today.
Federer got off to a strong start, winning his first round match with Dominik Hrbaty in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. He needs to capitalize early in the tournament because his draw is one of the most difficult one in years for a number one seed.
Rafael Nadal will be one of the men who will be trying to take Federer down. Nadal cruised to an easy win in the finals of the French Open over Federer. It was one of the worst matches of Federer's career.
An interesting occurence took place as Federer was about to finish off Hrbaty on Monday. The two are former doubles partners and are close. With one game left in the match, Hrbaty broke from tradition and went and sat next to Federer.
"I looked over and there he was. He asked if I could sit next to me. I said, 'Sure. There's no problem. There's an extra seat.' We go way back...He said it might be his last Wimbledon, so it was almost a little bit emotional," said Federer.
Hrbaty was just proud to be on the court for maybe the last time with Federer. "If it had been someone else, I wouldn't have done it...We've had a lot of good times together. I just wanted to tell him he's a great friend of mine, and I appreciate that," said Hrbaty.
