FIFA Shows NFL How To Handle Gambling; World Cup Betting Massive

While the NFL looks down upon gambling on their sport, FIFA, the group that controls the World Cup, embraces the idea. Instead of isolating gambling from the sport, FIFA has used sports books to ensure that there are no match fixing operations taking place.

Most Americans believe that the Super Bowl is the biggest betting event in the world, but that is only true for the game itself. As an event, the World Cup betting is millions of dollars ahead of the Super Bowl.

The World Cup starts in two weeks and sports books are embracing for an onslaught of action. The betting favorite is Spain, giving gamblers the opportunity to make four to one on their money should the Spanish squad take home the Cup.

Proposition bets are always a favorite of gamblers in big sporting events, and the World Cup is no different. Odds have been placed on who scores the most goals individually and as a team. Prop bets are also available for hundreds of other fun questions relating to players and outcomes.

The US is considerably better than they have been in previous World Cup's, but sports books still do not buy the idea that the US can win the entire tournament. The US carries current odds of 80/1 to win. Considering the way the American side played in the Confederation's Cup last summer, those odds may seem high to some bettors.

In the UK, the gambling may double what has been wagered in the past on the England squad. Opening against the US has many soccer fans in England placing bets simply because of the magnitude of the first game. US soccer fans are also enthusiastic about the prospects of starting the World Cup against England.

"I think with all of the side stories and the magnitude of what this World Cup will mean to so many countries, there is the possibility that this (World Cup 2010) becomes the biggest sports gambling event in history," said Gaming Analyst Brad Dawkins."
