Florida Baseball Teams Gambling On Youth To Carry Them Early
Major League Baseball can be unpredictable more than any other sport. It takes a full roster of players to perform for a team to be successful. Unlike football or basketball, a couple of star players does not guarantee success.
The Florida Marlins and the Tampa Bay Rays were both supposed to be near the bottom of their divisions. Through a month and a half, however, the Marlins lead the National League East, and the Rays are near the top in the American League.
Both teams are relying on youth to carry them this season. Timely hitting and above average pitching thus far have kept the two teams from struggling. They both have a large contingent of youth that is talented.
It was not known when that youth would mature, but at least through the middle of May, the returns have been good for both teams. Trades they have made for young players that were supposed to be for the future, are now suddenly for the present.
Whether either team can sustain their early season success will be determined in the dog days of summer. The fact still remains that they do play in warm weather locations, which has been proven to be an advantage early in the year.
For now, however, Tampa Bay and Florida will keep gambling on their youth, and hoping the young players will carry them to division titles.
