Florida Marlins Ballpark Wagering Finally Pays Off in Miami
The Florida Marlins somehow have managed to stay competitive in the National League. They sell of their best players every few years. That is, in between championship wins.
The Marlins also have another distinction around baseball. They have been the team talked about most when discussions of relocation occur.
The relocation talk may finally have been put to bed on Thursday. The team will be moving into a new home stadium. That stadium, however, will not be in Charlotte or Las Vegas. It will be just miles south of their current home, in Miami.
The site that will soon become the former home of the Miami Hurricanes, the Orange Bowl, will be the place that the Marlins will land for good. County Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a deal that would bring a retractable roof stadium to Miami.
The stadium will be fit with 37,000 seats. The deal should see groundbreaking done in November, and the Marlins will call it home to start the 2011 season.
A few issues still need to be resolved to keep the Marlins in South Florida. A deal must be made with police and fire departments which clarifies whether city or county will have jurisdiction over the site. That deal must be reached within the next month.
"One of the longest running hopes for a baseball stadium in the history of the game has finally ended, successfully," said Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria.
Part of the final deal for the stadium is that the team, starting in 2011, will be known as the Miami Marlins.
