Florida Marlins Defying Gambling Odds, Still Lead Division
The Florida Marlins play in a division with two of the more popular picks to win a National League pennant. The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets were highly talked about teams coming into the year.
As the second month of the season nears its end, the Florida Marlins are defying the gambling odds once again. They entered play tonight leading the National League East.
This was a team that was picked not only last in their division, but also last in the National League by some analysts. They lost the two faces of their franchise, Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit in the off season.
All they have done while the two have been gone is roll to one of the best records in the Major Leagues. Their pitching has been surprising, and their hitting is leading the way. They are hitting home runs in bunches and playing above average defense.
Odds makers did not even have the Marlins on their radar when the season began. Most win total prognostications had the Marlins between 50 and 60 wins for the year. It is only the end of May and they are already almost halfway to sixty.
Picked to finish last, the Marlins have done the one thing this season they have always been good at. They have proven the gambling odds wrong.
