Floyd Mayweather Rant Has Gamblers Longing For Pacquiao Fight
Boxing promoters have been searching for a way to make boxing relevant again in the US sports scene. The Floyd Mayweather rant on Friday may have provided a spark for fans and gamblers longing for a fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
The two fighters have used various reasons over the past couple of years to avoid having to square off in the ring. First, Pacquiao would not agree to drug testing close to the fight. Then, when Pacquiao finally made the concessions, Mayweather had other reasons why the fight could not take place.
After dodging Pacquiao, Mayweather threw gas on the fire that is their relationship on Friday. A video has surfaced that has Mayweather verbally attacking Pacquiao, and then using racist statements to drive his point home that he is the better boxer. It was the latest shot in what has been a war of words between two boxers who may never meet in the ring.
Pacquiao quickly dismissed the video when asked about the comments Mayweather made. Pacquiao asserted that the rant was an, "uneducated message." The video was delivered via Ustream, and further shows the power of social media in relation to its role in creating rivalry's within sports.
Mayweather and Pacquiao have been on what may of the sports shrinking fan base believe was a collision course. They are considered to be the two best boxers in the world, and the pay day from the pay-per-view event is estimated to be at more than $40 million for each fighter.
Gamblers would also like to see the fight. Boxing used to be one of the most bet on sports in the US, but since Mike Tyson fell from the top, the sport has slowly lost its appeal. Mixed martial arts has taken over as the fighting sport of choice for fans of violent exchanges between two competitors.
