French Open Gamblers Lose One Of Their Favorites In Federer

French Open gambling often comes down to which of the favorites that bettors believe will win. Rarely is a long shot going to come in at major tennis championships, so the burden falls on the gambler to choose between one of the top four or five seeds.

Anyone that placed money on the top seed, Roger Federer, watched their money go up in smoke on Tuesday. Federer was bounced from the French Open in a stunning four set loss to Robin Soderling, 6-3 3-6 5-7 4-6.

During the match, the players had to stop play because of a rain delay. Federer never seemed to gain his momentum back after the delay, making many unforced errors, and even having his serve broken several times, something that rarely happens.

Always the classy champion, Federer did not place blame on his play for his loss to Soderling. Instead, he chose to praise a player who had almost no success against Federer in the past.

"Well, disappointed to a certain degree,' said Federer, to a group of reporters nearly two hours after the loss. "I didn't think I played a bad match. he came up with some great tennis."

Now, not only did Federer get knocked out of the tournament, but he could lose his world number one ranking. Rafael Nadal is in line to claim the top spot should he finish off the field and become the french Open champion. Nadal and Federer have long been considered the two best tennis players in the world, but after an untimely exit from Federer, the two will have to wait for another head to head meeting.

Soderling is ranked fifth in the French Open brackets, and he will now face Tomas Berdych in the semi-finals. The other semi-final will be determined late today.
