Fresno State Defies Gambling Odds, Wins College World Series

College baseball, more than any other major collegiate sport, is set up so that the best teams in the country all year end up winning titles. They had not planned for a team like Fresno State to crash the party.

The Bulldogs from Fresno State completed the most improbable of runs on Wednesday night. They beat the gambling odds and have emerged as national champions after defeating Georgia 6-1.

Fresno State is a thirty loss team. Thirty loss teams are not supposed to even get to the College World Series, much less win it. Someone forgot to tell the Bulldogs, however, they were not invited.

In order to get to the College World Series, Fresno had to win their conference title. They had such a mediocre season, that without winning their conference, there was no hope for an at large bid into the field of sixty four.

After winning their conference title, they were given the four seed in a regional. All they did there was defeat the other three higher ranked teams, and move on to the Super-Regional.

Their luck was bound to end there after they drew the number three team in the country in Arizona State. After a couple of dramatic games, Fresno knocked the number three team out of the playoffs.

So on it was to Omaha, Nebraska, the site of the College World Series. All they had to do to get to the finals was win a bracket with the number two team in the country, North Carolina. No problem, the Bulldogs conquered another giant.

In the championship series, Fresno blew a late lead in game one to Georgia, and analysts were finally predicting Cinderella had met her match. The Bulldogs, however, had other ideas, winning games two and three of the series and becoming this year's national champion.

The story of the 2008 Fresno State Bulldog baseball team will go down as the biggest underdog story to ever win a national championship in any collegiate sport. To that, the Bulldogs deserve a tip of the baseball cap.
