Gamble On Iverson Ends In Disappointment In Philadelphia

The Philadelphia 76ers have made a series of moves that have not turned out the way they planned. Their biggest move this season, however, was bringing back favorite son Allen Iverson to play again with the team he once led to the NBA Finals.

That experiment ended on Tuesday with the announcement that Iverson will not play again for Philly this season. He has been out for several weeks attending to a health issue related to his daughter.

"After discussing the situation with Allen, we have come to the conclusion that he will not return to the Sixers for the remainder of the season," said 76ers General Manager Ed Stefanski, in a statement, "as he no longer wants to be a distraction to the organization and teammates that he loves very much."

Iverson has spent the seasons since his initial run in Philadelphia trying to fit in as a role player on other teams. He had little luck doing son in Denver, Detroit, and earlier this season, Memphis.

Now, it appears with the team that drafted Iverson turning their back on him, it might be the end of the road for one of the most prolific scorers the game has ever seen. Iverson only played in fourteen games for the 76ers after re-signing with the team.

This year was a roller coaster ride for the All-Star guard. After starting the year in Memphis, Iverson was voted into the All-Star game as a starter by fans, even though he was playing in the Eastern Conference by the time the votes had began rolling in. he did not play in the All-Star game, and now will wait until the off season to decide whether to make a return to the league.
