The Bowl Championship Series has graced its fans with the announcement that the national championship game on January 7th will be played between Ohio State University and Louisiana State University. The somewhat arbitrary selection of these two teams has left gamblers the world over unsatisfied.

Imagine if the Kentucky Derby were run the same way college football is. There would be all of the preliminary races, odds would be posted, the horses would be brought to Louisville and paraded in front of the crowd; then the horses would be returned to the paddocks, a vote would be conducted as to which two horses people thought might be the best, and only those two could race for the roses.

The idea of a playoff is overdue. Some may argue about a playoff's effect on the regular season, tradition of the bowls, or lost school time; but the truth is gamblers understand how to resolve this dispute: it must be settled on the field.

Many schools this year can lay a claim to being deserving of a top-two berth, due to the lack of a dominant team. Georgia, Oklahoma, USC, and Hawaii all have valid reasons to dream of a shot at a championship. The problem is that argument and subjective opinion determine the participants. But the contest is not to determine who is the best debater.

Gamblers understand how to resolve a discussion of this kind. The arguments are made, the wagers placed, and then the resolution occurs on the field. Imagine if all bets were settled by popular vote! It is past time; where is our resolution, college football?
