Gamblers Flee Before Glenn Beck Rally At Lincoln Memorial
Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend the Glenn Beck rally at the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday. Many Redskins fans and gamblers, however, will be in New York on the eve of the rally watching Washington in a preseason game against the Jets.
The Beck rally is being touted by the conservative talk show host as a "Restoring Honor" gathering. While Beck claims the rally is not political, top Democrats have already called his bluff, believing that anyone who has seen Beck on his show understands the rally is politically motivated.
"You've had a constant tirade against the president, against Democratic efforts to get the economy turned around," said Representative Chris Van Hollen, at the National Press Club. "Let's call it what it is. It's a blatant political effort."
The Redskins and Jets and their fans will be concerned this evening not with politics, but with their starting teams and how long they will play in the third preseason game tonight. The Jets are still without All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis, and the Redskins are hoping to see an improved Albert Haynesworth.
New York has been picked by many analysts as the team to beat in the AFC this year. Other experts warn that the Jets still have a lot of growing to do as a team. The critics point to the fact that the Jets needed both the Bengals and Colts to play without starters in the last two weeks to make the playoffs last year.
Washington has new coach Mike Shanahan and the former Broncos head man has set a standard of discipline early in camp. The Redskins, despite the addition of Shanahan and quarterback Donovan McNabb, are considered the last choice to win the NFC East by odds makers.
