Gambling Begins In Indianapolis After Montoya Wins Brickyard Pole
The Brickyard 400 has become one of the signature races for NASCAR and its fans over the past couple of years. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be filled with fans on Sunday hoping to see another epic race.
On Saturday, one of the Brickyard 400 betting favorites won the pole position. Juan Pablo Montoya had the top lap of the day at 182.278 mph Saturday morning, assuring that the driver would be in the most coveted starting spot on the track.
Montoya is no stranger to the Brickyard. Last year, a speeding penalty late in the race cost Montoya a victory. Now, he is setting his sights on erasing that memory and replacing it with one of victory on Sunday.
The overall betting favorite is Jimmie Johnson, who won last year's race thanks to Montoya's gaffe. Johnson and Montoya will not have to look far to keep tabs on each other on Sunday because Johnson qualified with the second fastest time of 182.142 Saturday. Johnson has won the Brickyard three times.
Casey Mears, David Stremme, J.J. Yeley, and David Gilliland have all been taking off the board in Las Vegas sports books after failing to qualify for the Brickyard on Saturday. Mears' omission is stunning considering his uncle, Rick Mears, won four Indianapolis 500 races.
Montoya and Johnson have already started throwing verbal jabs at each other leading up to the race tomorrow. Montoya contends that not only was his car better the day Johnson won, but Mike Martin also had the superior car to Johnson's. NASCAR's most successful driver the past several years responded by saying that he did, indeed, have the best car in last year's Brickyard.
