Gambling Debts Contribute To Antoine Walker Bankruptcy Filing
Antoine Walker was known during his NBA career as a player who would jack up shots at any time during the game. His reckless play sometimes angered both teammates and his coaches. Now, his off the court recklessness has cost Walker most of his money.
Earlier this month, Walker filed for bankruptcy protection. This came after Walker made over $100 million during his career while playing for the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics. Walker was known to have a passion for gambling, and that passion contributed to the loss of his earnings.
"Antonie Walker may go down as one of the saddest sports stories of our generation just because of the amount of money that he had made during his career," said Gaming Analyst Brad Dawkins. "It seems unfathomable that someone could lose over $100 million in the course of less than a decade."
Harrah's Entertainment in Las Vegas was listed as one of the casinos where Walker still owes a gambling debt. In the filings, Walker claims to owe Harrah's $770,000. Another casino, Ameristar Casino in East Chicago, Indiana, was named in the bankruptcy filings. Walker owes $500,000 to Ameristar.
Walker had been arrested in Nevada for debts that he owed at Las Vegas casinos. His story was similar to the one of NBA personality and former great Charles Barkley. The difference, however, was that Barkley paid his debts off, while Walker did not have the funds available to do so. Walker has entered into a payment plan with the Las Vegas District Attorney.
In 2006, Walker won an NBA Championship, and he may have to hand over his championship ring to creditors. The ring is valued at $6,000. While he claims to have no income, Walker did post in the filing that his family has monthly expenses of almost $80,000.
