Georgia Lawmaker Proposes Legalized Gambling On Horse Racing
Lawmakers in the state of Georgia discussed late last year the possibility of bringing casino gambling to Underground Atlanta. Those discussions did not lead to expansion, but it did open the door to the idea of more gambling in the state.
Representative Henry Geisinger believes that gambling expansion should come in the form of horse racing. Geisinger has proposed an amendment that would legalize horse racing betting in Georgia.
The idea has received some support with Geisinger collecting co-sponsors. In order for it to pass, legislators would have to vote in both chambers, and the vote must be in favor of the horse racing.
It is unlikely that such an amendment would be passed. There are many lawmakers in Georgia who are clinging to their southern roots and do not like the idea of expanded gambling in any form. These lawmakers could block the amendment.
"Georgia is one of the states that has been slow to change their gambling laws," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz, "While other states have embraced gambling expansion, Georgia lawmakers continue to see gambling as an evil activity."
Georgia is one of the states that is searching for ways to offset budget deficiencies. Geisinger is among a group of progressive lawmakers when it comes to gambling, and millions of dollars could be gained if the state brings horse racing gambling to fruition.
The racing industry has been among the hardest gambling industries hit by the economic recession. Even in Kentucky, where they take pride in the industry, lawmakers are considering adding slot machines to help the tracks survive.
