Glen Coffee Retirement Should Not Temper 49ers Betting Odds
Running back Glenn Coffee surprised many within the San Francisco 49ers organization on Friday when informed Head Coach Mike Singletary that he was retiring from football. Coffee only played professionally for one season.
The sudden retirement of Coffee should not temper the 49ers expectations or betting odds for the upcoming season. San Francisco fans are expecting their team to battle for the NFC West title and are hoping a strong playoff run will follow.
The starting running back in San Francisco is Frank Gore. The former Hurricanes standout has been the central part of the 49ers offense for several seasons. This year, Singletary is hoping that the passing game can take another step in the right direction. Tight end Vernon Davis became a play-maker last year, and top pick Michael Crabtree should be ready to perform at a high level.
Currently, San Francisco has odds of -1110, making them the favorites. Arizona had been the favorite for the past couple of years, reaching the Super Bowl just two seasons ago. The Cardinals, however, have lost their starting quarterback, Kurt Warner, and a top receiver in Anquan Boldin.
Arizona is the second choice of odds makers with odds of +250. The Cardinals still have a top defensive unit and a capable head coach in Ken Whisenhunt. Matt Leinart is predicted to win the starting quarterback job in the pre-season.
Seattle made many changes to their organization in the off season. Pete Carroll left USC to become the head coach. Carroll has had mixed success so far in the NFL, and he feels the experience he gained building USC into a powerhouse college football program will help lay the foundation for success this time around in the NFL. The Seahawks are have +300 odds.
The long shot to win the West is the St. Louis Rams. The Rams have one of the top runners in the league in Steven Jackson, but the offense has few weapons outside of Jackson. The defense was shredded several times last year, but their youth could serve as a spark plug for an exciting season. St. Louis is a 10/1 choice to win the division.
