Goaltending Hype Drops Hurricanes-Devils Total
The mainstream media is billing this Eastern Conference semifinals series a two-man duel between Carolina Hurricanes netminder Cam Ward and New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur. The sportsbooks are well aware of how much sway the press has over bettors, so bookies are giving them what they expect. Tonight's contest at the Swamp has been assigned a 5-goal total, half a goal lower than the totals on the first two games of this series.
I was actually reading a comparison between the two goaltenders in this series today, says Bodog. com oddsmaker Sebastian Chalmers. It was comparing Ward to a young Marty Brodeur. I think that kind of press has had a lot of impact on public perception. Although the Brodeur comparisons are probably premature, there's no denying that Ward has been stellar for Carolina in these playoffs.
