World Cup Opening News and notes For Gamblers
Some 1,430 days after we were all dazzled at some ungodly hour of the morning by Brazil's 2-0 victory over Germany in Japan in the last global futbol fiesta, World Cup 2006 is set to begin. Okay, so probably not everyone remembers that final so vividly because, let's face facts, soccer on this side of the pond doesn't come close to the popularity enjoyed by football, basketball, spelling bees and women's softball. Heck, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the NHL outdraws America's top soccer league, MLS. But America's soccer ignorance could change during the course of this tournament.
That's because this edition of the red, white and blue are poised to build off their success in 2002, when they were arguably the most exciting team in the tournament.
And now the likes of DaMarcus Beasley and Landon Donovan are four years older and wiser and have infused the squad with a confidence the Americans have never had. So what if they are slotted in the group of death with world No.2 the Czech Republic, perennial contenders Italy and African upstarts Ghana? To be the best, you have to beat the best and this U.S. squad, at +650 to win the group, may just do that.
