Green Bay Betting On Brett Favre Not Calling Their Bluff

Play at Golden Casino

The Green Bay Packers have had one face of the organization since the days of Reggie Brown. That face has led them to Super Bowl titles and is a cult hero in the town.

Perhaps the Packer organization should have thought harder about those facts before moving all in on Brett Favre on Saturday afternoon. Green Bay is gambling that their latest move will force Favre into retirement.

Favre was seeking his release from the Packers, but on Saturday the organization told him they would not grant that request. They acknowledged that Favre could return to their team, but he was not guaranteed a starting spot.

Anyone that believes the words that came out of the Packer organization today needs to have a check up. It is true that Green Bay does not want Favre to return, but should he chose to do so, he would be the starting quarterback when the team opens their season at home on Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings.

The Packers are ready to move on, but when a living legend who was one game from leading you to a Super Bowl appearance decides to come back the following year, you take him back. It does not matter if Aaron Rodgers is ready to take over as the starter.

Right or wrong, guys like Favre, Michael Jordan, and Roger Clemens deserve to go out on their terms. For years these athletes have filled stadiums and made millions of dollars for their employees.

When the time comes, they will tell you when they are leaving, not the other way around. They have earned that right, and in Favre's case, he might even still have something to offer his employer.

Green Bay can gamble all they want on Favre not wanting to return as a back up, but for a man who has made his living reading blitzes and defenses, Favre should have no problem picking apart this strategy.

If he wants to play, and be a starter, he knows that he can do both in Green Bay. It is now up to him whether to call the team's bluff or not.
