Griffey Jr. Is The Fans Last Gamble From The Steroid Era
First it was Mark McGwire. Then Rafael Palmeiro, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, and Manny Ramirez fell. Now, the last of the chips have fallen on Tuesday when news leaked that Sammy Sosa had tested positive for steroid use back in 2003.
That eliminates the core of the entire decade of the nineties. Fans are now left to wonder, is there any players that played during the steroid era that played the game clean. After the Sosa news, there may only be one name left.
Ken Griffey Jr. has played almost his entire career in the steroid era, yet he has never been linked to any performance enhancing drugs. Judging by his physical make-up, it does not appear that Jr. did steroids, but nobody will ever know for sure.
Griffey is the player most fans point to as the player who did it the right way. He now carries a huge burden with him through the end of his career. Should Griffey admit to, or be found to have, taken steroids, it could be the end of baseball for many fans.
"Ken Griffey Jr., however, is truly one of the few "real" hitters of my time that I can say did it the right way," said Lunger, on a fantasy baseball message board, "In fact, every argument people have against this era, I point to Junior. If it ever comes out that he cheated, I will lose my faith in this game."
A whole generation has been left without heroes. For fans that grew up in different generations that seems almost inconceivable. Two decades of players that were those heroes have been slowly eliminated, one by one, over the past few years.
Now, all that is left is Griffey. Here's hoping he turns out to be that hero this young generation so desperately needs to keep the National Pastime thriving into the new decade.
