Harsh Reality For Fantasy Baseball Leagues
At the new Busch Stadium it costs $5 for an official Cardinals program. 50 cents for the pencil. And the numbers and statistics you write down? Well, they could be worth millions. Major League Baseball says they own those numbers and so they're being taken to court by owner of some fantasy baseball leagues.
"If Major League Baseball were to win, it would almost certainly mean that there would be fewer fantasy outlets," says intellectual property attorney Ben Clark. CBC Distribution and Marketing Incorporated, based here in St. Louis, uses baseball statistics in their fantasy leagues because they say they're in the public domain. Major League Baseball wants them to be licensed. "It's a joke, let us play and go have some fun thats what the leagues about," says fantasy player Tim Nagel. "I think they're doing well enough that they don't have to charge for that, they could pursue other opportunities for income," says baseball fan Michael Dohm.
