High Betting Odds On Current Baseball Division Leaders

The odds makers are paid to put out betting odds that will reflect how the public views a particular team or match up. If that is the case, then the public has been completely wrong with their World series choices based on the first week and a half of the season.

The Major League Baseball season is long and certainly nothing is decided in the seasons first two weeks. It is fun, however, to take a glance at the standings and see what odds the first place teams had of winning a championship.

In the American League East, the Toronto Blue Jays are 7-3 and in first place. They came into the season with 60-1 odds to win the title. In the West, Seattle is in first and also had 60-1 odds. Texas and Oakland trail the Mariners and are 50-1 and 30-1, respectively.

The only division leader to this point in the season with less than 30-1 odds are the Detroit Tigers, and they still were 25-1. The same kind of craziness exists in the National league.

The Florida Marlins have baseball's best record at 8-1. Their odds to win a title before the year started were 25-1. In the Central division, the St. Louis Cardinals are in the lead and their odds were 22-1.

Over in the West may be the biggest surprise as far as the odds go. The San Diego Padres, who some believed would be the worst team in baseball, are 6-3, and had World series odds of 75-1.

It is true that the baseball season has not even hit the month of May, but there is always the possibility that one of these division leaders surprises all the way through the season. If that happens, and they get lucky enough to win a title, it could mean high payouts for gamblers who took a chance on the long shots.
