Home Run Derby 2010 Betting Odds: Miguel Cabrera Favored
Miguel Cabrera is having one of his best seasons this year since coming into Major League Baseball. The Tigers slugger is first in two of the three triple crown categories in the American League, and is only two home runs off the leader.
If Cabrera completes the triple crown with a strong second half, it will be the first time in forty-three years that a player has accomplished the feat. Carl Yastrzemski was the last to do it back in 1967.
Tonight may be the only thing that can stop Cabrera from reaching that gaol. Home Run Derby 2010 begins from Anaheim this evening, and in the past, players that have won the derby have had terrible slumps in the second half in terms of power numbers. Cabrera is the betting favorite to win at 11/4.
Theories have been floated that the tiring competition can wear on a players endurance. The three hour competition has players going all out at a time when they are supposed to be resting their bodies for the second half. In Cabrera's situation, his Tigers are in the midst of a pennant race, so they cannot afford a decrease in second half numbers.
David Ortiz has participated in the derby in past years. Ortiz, who many thought was on the verge of being cut by the Red Sox earlier this season, is the second betting choice at 3/1. Corey Hart of the Brewers and Nick Swisher of the Yankees are both 5/1 choices.
Matt Holliday of the Cardinals, another player who has previously taken part in the derby, has odds of 11/2. Vernon Wells is a 15/2 choice after having a comeback season for Toronto, justifying the large contract the Blue Jays gave him a couple of seasons ago.
For gamblers who like to bet on the long shots, Chris Young of Arizona and Hanley Ramirez of the Marlins are both 10/1 picks. Ramirez will be batting fourth for the National League when the All-Star game begins on Tuesday night.
