The Nebraska horse racing industry is struggling much like the industry is hurting in other states. A constitutional amendment proposal to allow more simulcast race betting throughout the state was squashed on Thursday by lawmakers.
The constitutional amendment proposal would have allowed betting to take place at locations approved in individual cities or counties. Lawmakers, however, shot down the plan on Thursday and now the horse racing industry will have to look elsewhere to try and survive in the current economic conditions.
Opponents of the amendment believed that even with the additional betting options, the industry would not have been saved. They claim that the additional gambling would only cause social ills caused by gambling addictions.
Proponents of the expanded gambling options claim that the industry cannot survive by only offering the betting at the tracks. Throughout the country, attendance is down at race tracks, and the purse's for many of the biggest races have fallen.
Kentucky lawmakers have been considering adding slot machine gambling at their race tracks. Governor Steve Beshear is in favor of the expanded gambling option, but legislators so far have closed the door on the idea for this legislative session.
Other states have been partaking in major gambling expansion. Casinos are being built in nearly every state, and some states that already had casinos have added table games such as blackjack, roulette, and baccarat.
