In The End, Tour de France Betting Comes Down To Contador
The debate has been raging on for months now over whether or not Lance Armstrong was physically fit enough at his age to win the Tour de France. In the early stages, it looked as though Armstrong would be a major factor this year.
Tomorrow, all Tour de France betting will be put to rest, and barring the most unlikeliest of accidents, Alberto Contador will be the rider who wins the race. It will end a couple of weeks worth of friction between Contador and his Astana teammate, Armstrong.
The two had been clumped together at the top of the overall standings heading into last weekend. Then, Contador pulled away from the pack in an individual stage and Armstrong could not keep up. That left the American rider to concede that he had to help his teammate win, and forget about his own glory.
With only one stage left on Sunday, Armstrong will be looking for Contador to return the favor. Armstrong is currently third, and is trying to hold on to a place on the podium when the race concludes. It would be a great achievement for Astana to place two of the top three riders.
The last stage is not typically one where major time can be made up. It is more ceremonial than it is a race. The track is flat, and the riders generally stay together on their way into Paris.
For Contador, it will be his second Tour de France win. he previously won the event back in 2007. Armstrong will not have to deal with playing second fiddle when he returns to France next year. He has signed up Radio Shack as a sponsor for a new team that he is starting after the Tour is over.
