Gamblers are sly when it comes to placing their bets on big events. For the Super Bowl, some bettors make their wagers weeks before the game is even played. The World Cup is no different, and millions of dollars have already been bet on the biggest soccer event in the world.
The World Cup this year is being played in South Africa. Bettors who have placed early wagers may be concerned, however, after the amount of recent injuries that may keep the top players in the world out of the competition. This week alone, at least three players went down with injuries.
Among the top concerns of both fans and gamblers is the Ivory Coast team. Didier Drogba, who led Chelsea to the premiere League championship, has fractured his arm, and has told fellow players that he will miss the entire World Cup. That is devastating news for a team that expected to have a strong showing.
Italy has several players that may not make it to the field next week. Among those that are resting injuries is Andrea Pirlo. Pirlo has a neck injury and not many expect him to be able to play when Italy begins their World Cup defense.
The US received a scare when their star striker Jozy Altidore sprained his ankle in a practice this past week. Altidore is one of the few US offensive threats, and although his injury does not appear serious, just the thought of not having their top striker is worrisome for the US squad.
US' opponent in the first match is England. The number three ranked team in the world received bad news on the injury front this past week themselves. English captain Rio Ferdinand injured his knee during World Cup practice, and has been ruled out of the tournament.
Netherlands winger Arjen Robben hurt his hamstring in a friendly on Saturday against Hungary. The injury now places in doubt Robben's presence on the field in the World Cup. Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar hurt his back in a match against Zimbabwe, but he is expected to play in Brazil's first match this week.
