The Major League Baseball season is a marathon not a sprint. Even long distance runner know, however, that an extra push is needed down the stretch to hold off the competition. Injuries are playing a big part in the stretch run for many contenders.
The MLB betting odds have changed many times throughout the season. The only sure thing the entire year is that the New York Yankees are, and have been, the betting favorites to win back to back titles.
The Yankees are in first place in the American League East, but injuries are starting to effect the Yankees' play on the field. The latest injury was to Alex Rodriguez, who was placed on the fifteen day disabled list on Saturday. That injury alone opens the door for the Tampa Bay Rays to overtake New York on top of the division.
In The AL central, Minnesota has been without Justin Morneau for over a month. Despite the injury to their star first baseman, the Twins have opened their lead over Chicago. The White Sox have been dealing with nagging injury's to closer Bobby Jenks.
The Texas Rangers have been dealing with a plethora of injury's. Nelson Cruz and Ian Kinsler are both out for the Rangers, but somehow they have managed to maintain their lead in the West. Barring a collapse in September, the Rangers will be playing in the post season for the first time in the new millennium.
Over in the National League, the East is filled with the injury bug. The defending NL champions, the Phillies, have been trying to run down Atlanta in the past month without Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, and Ryan Howard. All three of those stars are back as of Saturday, and the Phillies are one of the hottest teams in the league, making for an exciting race in the East.
The Reds and Cardinals are fighting for the Central crown and neither have significant injury's heading down the stretch. San Diego continues to lead in the West.
