Inter Milan Makes Gamblers Worldwide Happy After Champions Win
Soccer may not be American football when it comes to gambling, but there is no shortage of wagers coming in on top soccer matches. On Saturday, the biggest event in European soccer took place, the Champions League final, and Inter Milan entered as the gambling favorite over Bayern Munich.
The odds were a bit peculiar because Inter is a squad that is built on their strong defense. That defense was again on display, with Bayern controlling the ball for much of the match, and Inter Milan holding their ground.
It was Diego Milito, however, that was the difference on this day. Milito delivered both goals in the championship match, and sent Inter Milan to their first title in the top league in forty-five years. Milito did not mix words when speaking about his feelings on the big win.
"I don't think I have ever felt such joy," said Milito, "Our President (Massimo Moratti) is the first to deserve this trophy. It's a unique feeling. I'm thirty, I had to wait a long time to win a trophy like this but this is football and football always gives you a chance to make amends."
The actual figures on the amount of money that was gambled on the match were unknown immediately afterwards. One online sports book estimated that the total would be in the tens of millions. With the match having small odds either way, gamblers were able to pick the team they wanted and run with it without having to lose too much on the match.
Soccer has had its share of gambling controversy's in recent years, but it is not expected that any corruption would come out of a match of this magnitude. Bayern was looking to win their first title in almost a decade, but fell short. Inter completed a run that saw them defeat Barcelona in the semi-finals before finishing off Bayern Munich on Saturday.
