It Is Always A Gamble When Sports Playoff Series Go Deep
If you are the favorite in a sports playoff series, the last thing that you want is to get into a desperation game six or seven. When that occurs, it means the underdogs have fought tough enough through the series to believe they can win.
In Los Angeles, the Lakers were expected to bounce the Rockets out of the playoffs immediately after it was learned that Yao Ming would be out for the rest of the series. Then a funny thing happened, Houston blew out the Lakers in game four.
That loss prompted the Lakers to wake up from their postseason funk, and deliver a similarly devastating loss to Houston in game five, by forty points. Now the two teams meet in game six, and the last thing Los Angeles wants is to have to play game seven on Sunday.
Over in the Eastern Conference a similar story is developing. The Orlando Magic are considered to be the more talented team in their match up with defending champion Boston. They fell apart, however, and now face elimination at home.
In the NHL there is even more of a dangerous situation developing. The Detroit Red Wings are picked by many to win the Stanley Cup again this year. After the San Jose Sharks were knocked out in the first round, Detroit was believed to be the best team left in the playoffs.
They will have to survive at home tonight when they play a game seven against what has been the grittiest team in the league, Anaheim. The Red Wings are a strong favorite, but it would not be surprising to see the Ducks pull off the upset.
