The movie Major League is widely considered to be one of the top five sports movies of all-time. On Friday, the man who played manager Lou Brown in the movie, James Gammon, passed away after a long battle with cancer.
Before Major League came along, bettors were fixated on gambling on the favorites. It was rare that anyone would take a chance with teams that were not expected to win when the season began. The movie, however, changed the thought process of gamblers by showing that the underdog can actually win.
In the movie, Brown manages a team of misfit ballplayers on the Cleveland Indians. The team was put together by the owner to fail, and as the team started to win, the owner attempted to sabotage the players. Brown held the team together, and they eventually became winners.
Similar stories have unfolded in the past decade regarding real sports teams that were not expected to win. Although the real sports teams did not have owners trying to stall success, the gambling aspect remained the same. For bettors who took a chance on long shots before the season, several paid off in big money grabs.
"You may run like Mays, but you hit like s**t," was one of the most famous lines that was uttered by Gammon in Major League. He was speaking to a cocky player who was played by Wesley Snipes. Managers of today have learned valuable lessons of how to deal with diva players from Gammons' character.
Sports books have also caught on to the underdog betting trends in recent years. Pre-season betting odds have been dropped because of the possibility of large payouts at the end of the year. In this summer's World Cup, sports books were pummeled early when Switzerland upset Spain. After that game, odds makers adjusted for the possibility of an upset.
