Kentucky Derby Betting Odds: Lookin At Lucky Favored In The Rain
The last thing the state of Kentucky and their horse racing industry needed was a Kentucky Derby that had minimal drawing power. With rain pounding the state, and the expected favorite already pulled out of the race, this year's Kentucky Derby could not have come at a worse time.
Rain has pelted the track at Churchill Downs for much of the night on Friday, and into Saturday. The pre-race runs have been cancelled, and all that is left is twenty horses running on a sloppy track to determine which has a chance to become the first Triple Crown winner in over three decades.
Lookin at Lucky was the morning line favorite and has remained the favorite just a couple of hours before the race. The horse is a 3/1 choice and will be running out of the first post position. It is not the ideal starting spot, but it should not have too much of a negative effect on the horse's run.
Sidney's Candy is gaining momentum with gamblers. The horse is running from the opposite side of the track, in the twenty position, and is a 5/1 betting choice. Devil May Care, Awesome Act, and Ice Box are all at 10/1.
The race is as important as ever to a Kentucky racing industry that is struggling financially. Governor Steve Beshear has proposed authorizing slots at state racetracks to help increase revenue, but lawmakers in the state have thus far rejected that idea.
The horse racing industry in general in the US is struggling with many of the true racing fans getting older. The youth of the US have moved away from sports such as horse racing and boxing in favor of more aggressive sports such as snowboarding and mixed martial arts.
