Knicks Gambling On LeBron After A Flurry Of Trades This Week
The New York Knicks have done something that few NBA teams have done over the course of history. They have positioned themselves to be at the mercy of the league's top stars in the upcoming free agent period.
On Thursday, the Knicks completed a week in which they gutted their team in order to create even more salary cap room going into the biggest free agent year in the history of the game. Many of the league's top stars will be free agents after the current season, and LeBron James, is at the head of that class.
Coming into the year, it was believed that Miami would have the most room under the cap at the end of the season. After Thursday's trades, it now looks as though the Knicks will have enough money to sign two players to the max-contract.
The Knicks has made no secret of their desire to have King James playing in New York next season. This week, they have traded away a bunch of players, one of which, Nate Robinson, was traded to their Eastern Conference rivals, the Boston Celtics.
New York did pick up another player who has been yearning to play in the big city. Tracy McGrady was traded from Houston to New York as part of a three-way deal with Sacramento. The Rockets received Kevin Martin, Hilton Armstrong, Jordan Hill, Jared Jeffries, and draft picks in 2011 and 2012 in the deal.
Outside of James, Joe Johnson, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, and Carlos Boozer are also free agents after this year. That is just a sampling of what many consider will be one of the biggest spending spree summers in the league's storied history, and the Knicks have now positioned themselves to be at the center of it all.
