Lalas, Overbeck elected to National Soccer HOF
Former national team stars Alexi Lalas and Carla Overbeck will be inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame this summer. The elections of Lalas and Overbeck, both defenders, were announced Saturday at halftime of the MLS match between the New England Revolution and the Los Angeles Galaxy.
"Alexi and Carla were tremendous players and both played important roles in the sport's history as key members of U.S. teams that made an impact on the world stage,'' Hall of Fame president Will Lunn said.Overbeck played on four consecutive NCAA championship teams at the University of North Carolina and was a member of the U.S. team that won the inaugural Women's World Cup in 1991. She was captain of the 1999 World Cup championship team.Lalas became one of the most recognized American soccer players in the early '90s, thanks to his red goatee and aggressive play.
