Lance Armstrong Expected To Take A Gamble With New Race Team
Lance Armstrong and his Astana teammate Alberto Contador have both wanted to be the top dog at this year's Tour de France. The problem is that there can only be one winner, and that now looks like it will be Contador and not Armstrong.
This race has been and always be about winning for Armstrong. That is why a tweet on Tuesday from the star rider indicates that he may be preparing to leave Astana for his own race team next year.
"Making a very cool announcement on Thursday re: a new American partner for our team in 2010. Stay tuned!" read the tweet. many have begun to speculate that the announcement will be the formation of Armstrong's own tea,.
If he does leave Astana, it will not be alone. Team manager Johan Bruyneel will most likely leave along with Armstrong. He has been the manager of Armstrong's previous US Postal service and Discovery Channel teams.
"It's time to turn a page in my career," said Bruyneel, according to a report by Agence France-Presse. The friction within the team has been well documented throughout this year's Tour de France.
Early on, it looked as though Armstrong would not be content with playing second fiddle to Contador. After Contador pulled away in a recent stage, however, Armstrong conceded that he may not be in enough riding shape to win the Tour, and that he would rather race smartly then cost the team the top winner.
