Lance Berkman Acquisition Improves Yankees Betting Odds

The New York Yankees were already considered to be the betting favorites to win the World Series this season. On Saturday, the Yankees improved their betting odds by acquiring first baseman Lance Berkman from the Houston Astros.

The Yankees already have an All-Star at first base in Mark Teixeira, with Berkman expected to take over the designated hitter spot in the Yankees lineup. New York had been looking at several big name hitters in the past week, and they settled on Berkman after the Astros picked up some of the rest of Berkman's salary the rest of the season.

Berkman will head to Tampa where the Yankees are playing the first of what will be many important games within their division down the stretch. The Rays are right on the Yankees heels in the American League East.

Tampa is expected to make a couple of moves to counter the Berkman deal, but as of yet no trades have been completed. The Rays have until 4PM on Saturday to work a deal before the deadline.

This season, many players may be available after the trading deadline. A player must clear waivers in order to be traded after the deadline, but with the economic conditions around the league, the high priced players such as Cleveland closer Kerry Wood could easily clear waivers.

The Chicago White Sox made a move earlier on Friday to acquire Edwin Jackson from the Arizona Diamondbacks. The move was expected to be a preliminary deal which could result in the White Sox moving Jackson to Washington for Adam Dunn.
