Las Vegas Prepares for 2008 MLB Winter Meetings
On Monday, baseball executives will head to Las Vegas, Nevada for the 2008 MLB Winter Meetings. Every year at this time, when we almost forget about baseball completely, the media goes stir-crazy over the Winter Meetings, a time when major league baseball elites meet to discuss the top issues concerning the League.
Players, agents, owners, and executives will arrive in Las Vegas on Monday. Top items of discussion will be multi-player trades and free-agent signings. Scott Boras, the top sports-agent for most of the highest-paid players in the league, is expected to put on a spectacle, as he does each year.
Some have questioned whether or not any business is likely to get done in Las Vegas this time-around. With the card tables nearby, the slot machines ringing off-the-hook, and cocktail waitresses serving the finest drinks from the casino, MLB power-brokers could be distracted by the glitz n' glamour in Las Vegas.
The MLB Winter Meetings is a four-day event, starting on Monday at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino on the Vegas strip. Some marquee news to keep an eye on during the week is the retirement of pitcher Greg Maddux; C.C. Sabathia and the Yankees; Will K-Rod get what he's worth?; A-Rod playing for the Dominican Republic in next year's World Classic; many multi-player trades as well.
Baseball, money, gambling, alcohol, and legal-prostitution will assure "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". Baseball-wives beware.
