Tiger Woods emerged on Friday after a two month absence in the spotlight. Although his name and news of his whereabouts had been discussed in the media, Woods had not actually placed himself in front of a camera until today.

At the end of the staged news conference, many began to debate the sincerity of Woods' message. One thing Woods did not mention, however, was when he would be making a return to the sport he has dominated for over a decade and a half.

Sports books in Las Vegas and around the world were highly anticipating Woods' remarks on Friday. They were hoping that the statement would give an indication as to when he would return. It did not, and now the odds makers are left wondering.

There are few athletes in the world that can change the betting odds when they are not in competition. In team sports, the change in odds is usually minimal when a key player is out for a game.

In golf, however, Woods makes every other golfer a longer long shot to win when he is entered in a tournament. The longer odds are usually a sign that more betting action will come in to the sports books. Gamblers like taking chances on long shots, because the payouts are worth the risk.

Woods made almost every other golfer have those long odds. Without him, less people watch the weekend tournaments, and with less people watching, that means less people are gambling.

Woods may have apologized to his fans, his family, his sponsors, and the golf world, but he made no mention of his return to the golf course. The lack of that key information may cause Woods to owe one more apology, to the betting industry.
