Los Angeles Lakers Gambling On Health For Second Half Run

The Los Angeles Lakers are the defending NBA champions. They have been predicted by many to repeat as champions in this year's playoffs, and the only thing that could stop them, according to many experts, is themselves.

Now, more than halfway through the season, another obstacle has arisen that could derail the Lakers from a repeat. Injuries have set in, and one of those injuries is to the player that is widely considered to be the best player in the league.

Kobe Bryant missed the team's last three games before the All-Star break, and word out of Los Angeles is that he may miss tonight's home game against Golden State with an ankle injury. If Bryant cannot go, the Lakers will again turn to Pau Gasol to lead the team to another victory.

The Lakers are 3-0 in the absence of Bryant, but realistically they understand that in order for them to repeat, Bryant must be on the court. A playoff team they may be without their superstar, but a champion with the likes of Denver and Dallas standing in their way is not likely.

Also injured for L.A. is Andrew Bynum. The big man has missed the past several games and is dealing with a knee injury. He is expected to be back either tonight or later this week. Luke Walton has a back injury that is threatening to sideline him for the rest of the season.

There is only one month left until the stretch run begins and the march towards the playoffs in under way. The Lakers and Cavaliers are the betting favorites, but health will play a big part in who eventually wins, and right now, that x-factor does not favor Los Angeles.
