Major League Baseball Still Gambling On Interleague Play
Major League Baseball needed a way to come back from a strike that crippled its fan base. The powers that be got together and decided that interleague play would be a good option to bring fans back to the game.
Now, years later, the league is still gambling on interleague play to boost attendance in ballparks around the country. This weekend caps another successful run through interleague play.
The New York Mets and Yankee fans certainly are enjoying the wrinkle in the schedule. Every year, the two teams get together and play for bragging rights in the state.
The same thing happens in many states. In Chicago, the Cubs and White Sox enjoy a similar rivalry to the one found in New York. In California, the Angels and Dodgers get to play to rule California.
Even in lesser baseball markets, the rivalries can be intense. Kansas City and St. Louis do battle every year, with the winner being crowned the champions of Missouri for that season.
In Florida, the Rays and the Marlins are both experiencing success this season, leading to more heated games. The Rays have dominated the series this year so far, but Florida has two World Series titles to their credit.
The interleague games have been seen as positive even by the most purest of fans. While other sports have moved quickly towards change, baseball is set in preserving its history.
Another year has elapsed, and one of the few baseball moves that has paid off is coming to an end. Until next year, teams will have to live off the memories created by this season's interleague rivalry's.
