Many Major League Teams Gambling On Manager Firings To Win
This is the time of the Major League Baseball season that general manager's and owners begin to assess how their team will perform for this season. The sample size is now large enough that a determination can be made.
For the New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, and Seattle Mariners, there upper management are all gambling on managerial changes to spark underachieving clubs.
The Mets were the first to make the move early in the week. They, coincidentally, are the team out of the three that is still somewhat in a pennant race.
Seattle dumped their manager after starting the season miserably. They had aspirations of winning the American League West, but have not even come close to their potential, and have a miserable record thus far.
Toronto is in last place in the American League East, a place usually reserved for the Rays and the Orioles. With Tampa Bay playing well, and the Yankees and Red Sox in the division, time was short for the Blue Jays to turn around their season.
These are only the start of what could be a busy season of firing managers. There are still at least six manager's whose jobs do not appear safe, and for once, the Yankees manager is not included on that list.
With over ninety games still to go, the three teams who made moves this week will be betting that new blood at the top will revive hope and performance. It better, or else more moves could be following.
