Maria Sharapova Favored in Women's US Open Tennis Draw
Maria Sharapova, the Russian-born tennis star and most accomplished women's tennis player on hardcourts this year, is favored to win the 2006 U.S. Open Tennis Championships.
No longer just a free swinger, she has improved her all-around game including finesse capabilities, as well as has her physical fitness and defense.
Sharapova should be able to cruise right into the fourth round, where she will likely face Mary Pierce, who reached the US Open final last year, but has been injured and was crushed by Sharapova in San Diego recently. The 4th round could also bring China's highest ranked player, Na Li, or U.S. hopeful Shenay Perry, but Sharapova is too strong overall for both of them.
In the semifinals is where Sharapova should really be pushed to the limit, as anyone who comes out of the opposite quarter will be battle-tested.
The other players who will be clawing and scratching their way into a match with Sharapova are 2-time US Open champ Serena Williams, Amelie Mauresmo, 1997 US Open champ Martina Hingis, Daniela Hantuchova, Dinara Safina and Ivanovic.
Serena just defeated Hantuchova in Los Angeles, but even if she gets by the slender and talented Slovak, who upset her in Australia, she will likely have to face Ivanovic, an agile, athletic player who can crush the ball off both wings and just won Montreal.
In our view, it really doesn't matter who you bet on to win the tournament, the next two week's of tennis action is going to be exciting.
