On Tuesday, the defending national champion Alabama football team received bad news regarding their Heisman winning running back Mark Ingram. The star running back had arthroscopic surgery on his knee after injuring the knee in practice.

The injury will cause Ingram to miss the season opener against San Jose State, and there is a strong possibility that other games could be missed as well. The longer Ingram remains out, the more the college football betting odds will shift in the coming weeks.

The Crimson Tide have been the top pick of almost every analyst to win another title this season. The odds makers also have Alabama as the top choice, with Ohio State, Florida, and Boise State also receiving strong odds to win the championship.

Alabama is facing the prospect of getting out of the SEC without their top player. If Ingram is unable to go, the match ups within the conference will become that much more difficult for Alabama, and other teams may sense weakness and take advantage of the opportunity.

The likelihood is small, however, that coach Nick Saban allows the injury to affect his team negatively. Saban has built a powerhouse program in just a few short years at Alabama, and there are plenty of options to go to at tailback. The most obvious option is sophomore Trent Richardson. The running back gained over 750 yards as a backup last season.

Even before the injury, the emergence of Richardson had some analysts doubting that Ingram could win back to back Heisman trophy. Richardson was expected top gain much more playing time in order to keep Ingram fresh throughout the year. Now, the sophomore will have to jump right into the starting role.
