Memphis May Be The Betting Favorite To Win The NCAA Tournament
The University of North Carolina had their chance. So did Connecticut, Duke, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, and Oklahoma, with some of them having more than one opportunity. all of these college basketball programs have been ranked number one at some point this year.
The one team that is not in that list may be the one that enters the NCAA tournament as the betting favorite to win the championship. After a year of being disrespected in the polls, the Memphis Tigers are now, and have been for a while, the hottest team in the country.
"If you look at what the committee did a year ago, four number ones, all four in the final games, and there were very few lower teams beating upper teams,' said Memphis Head Coach John Calipari, "If they think we're a number two seed, we'll try to prove them wrong."
That kind of talk no longer applies to Calipari's team. They are not going to be a number two seed, and nobody is going to disrespect them from this point on. They were in the championship game last year, and have followed that up with another tremendous season.
The three seniors on this team have compiled more wins than any other class in NCAA history. It is true that the schedules have expanded in the past twenty five years, but that does not take away from the fact that this senior group knows how to win basketball games.
Many experts will attack the conference they play in as a reason for not giving them a number one seed. Memphis has done everything to counter that argument by going on the road to play Tennessee and Gonzaga, and playing an above average out of conference schedule.
In speaking to ESPN after the Tigers clinched their second consecutive conference title, Calipari said what could become the scariest thing about this year's group. He made the claim that this year's team is a better defensive team than the one that played for the national championship a year ago.
The rest of the NCAA had better take notice, before it is too late.
