Miami-Dade Betting On The Marlins, And Vice-Versa
The Florida Marlins have been trying to complete a stadium deal for a long time now, and on Monday they moved one step closer to realizing that dream. Miami-Dade County Commissioners voted 9-4 in favor of a stadium deal with the Marlins.
The vote signals the beginning of the end of a long journey. It also signaled that the city of Miami and the Marlins are now betting that they are a match made in heaven. Only time will tell whether that is proven true.
For a long time now, the Marlins have been a team that is largely supported by the Latin community in South Florida. Since the majority of those Latin fans come from Miami, it made sense to bring the team closer to their fan base.
The battle has been ongoing now for many years. The team has even changed owners a couple of times because stadium deals could not get done. The deal made on Monday will actually save the current owner, Jeffrey Loria, over $60 million from what he offered to pay for the stadium last year.
So the Marlins are staying put in South Florida. There will be no more talk of relocation or contraction. All that will be left to be determined is whether the team will decide to spend a portion of their increased revenue to expand their payroll of $22 million, in appreciation of taxpayers paying for their new home.
