Minnesota Twins Gambling on Liriano To Fill Santana's Void
The Minnesota Twins are similar to many teams in Major League Baseball. They do not have a big enough market to be able to keep all of their high priced superstars.
Evidence of that occurred this off season. Minnesota knew they had to make a trade involving the best pitcher on the planet, Johan Santana. He was going to be a free agent at the end of the year, and the Twins did not have the money to sign him.
They sat around and watched as the Yankees and Red Sox showed interest more to keep Santana away from each other. In the end, the Mets came away with Santana for some top prospects.
Most teams would be crumbled by losing a pitcher of Santana's credentials. The Twins, however, have a player that might turn out to be as good as Santana. His name? Francisco Liriano.
Liriano was a phenom two years ago when he came out of nowhere to dominate hitters, him and Santana were a devastating one two punch.
Now with Santana gone, and Liriano a year removed from major surgery, the Twins are hoping he can make a full recovery and become the ace of what still is, on paper, a competitive team.
