MLB Betting Odds Change With Strasburg In Nationals Rotation

Stephen Strasburg has been anointed as the chosen one by fans in the Washington D.C. area. The rookie phenom will be called on not only to pitch at a high level, but also to rejuvenate an organization that has not given their fans much to celebrate in the past couple of years.

Strasburg not only will change the dynamic in the Washington clubhouse, but he also will change the betting patterns of some gamblers. Every time Strasburg takes the hill this summer, it will be with the expectations of a shutout.

Fernando Valenzuela and Dwight Gooden are the last two rookies that have commanded this type of fever surrounding their starts. Gooden, at the time, helped turn around the fortunes of a Mets team that had grown used to losing. Valenzuela turned the Dodgers into contenders as well.

Strasburg will have help at the top of the rotation, possibly as soon as later this year. Jordan Zimmerman is expected back from major surgery sometime in the second half of the season. Livan Hernandez has been eating up innings, and the three together could give Nationals fans something to cheer about down the stretch.

The expectations for the Nationals was not extremely high coming into the season. They were picked by almost every analyst to finish last in the National League East, and after a strong start, have fell to the bottom position in the division.

Sports books, however, are not looking at Washington's record when Strasburg is on the mound. The betting odds have dropped drastically in games that Strasburg pitches compared to other Nationals games. That trend will likely continue with every shutout that the star pitcher throws, much to the chagrin of bettors.
