MLB Betting Odds: Does Signing Of Damon Make Tigers A WS Favorite?
Johnny Damon won a World Series as a central figure for the Boston Red Sox. He then went to Boston's hated rivals, the Yankees, and helped that team reclaim their spot on the top of the baseball world.
Now, Damon is being called on to help return the Detroit Tigers to baseball's grandest stage. Damon was signed over the weekend by Detroit, making them one of the favorites in the American League.
The Tigers already had a cast of players that came within one game of winning the American League Central last year. In fact, had the Tigers not melted down in the final week of the season, they may have altered the entire playoffs.
Damon reiterated that point when he spoke at a news conference on Monday announcing his arrival in Detroit. Damon spoke of how the Yankees may have had a more difficult time getting through the playoffs had they faced the Tigers instead of the Twins in the first round.
The new Tigers outfielder will most likely be counted on to handle lead-off duties for Detroit. Earlier this off season, Detroit send their lead-off man from last year, Curtis Granderson, to the Yankees.
Damon is getting up there in age, and he only signed a one year deal with the Tigers. That shows where the Tigers thinking is as far as this year, they are expecting to win. With Damon at the top, and a more than formidable pitching staff, Detroit may have just become the betting favorites to take the division title back from the Twins this season.
