MLB Betting Odds: Mets And Phillies Have Early Season Showdown
After the first week of the season, many fans and analysts believed that this weekends trip to Philadelphia could be the last straw that gets Manager Jerry Manual and GM Omar Minaya fired. Instead, the Mets head to Philly in first place in the National League East.
The Mets have been led by a surprising pitching staff that ranks third in the National League. While the Mets have won seven straight, the Phillies have struggled with their pitching whenever Roy Halladay is not on the mound.
Philadelphia appeared ready to run away with the East after the first two weeks, but an injury to Jimmy Rollins slowed the team down considerably. Now, the Phillies will have to take two of three from New York this weekend to be back on top of the division.
The Mets have also used the youthful exuberance of Ike Davis to kick-start this winning streak. Davis was called up to play first place, and has provided a spark for a team that has been known to be complacent while playing in the past. Davis has hit well, and it is clear to anyone watching the Mets these days that he has provided that hustle attitude that has been missing in recent seasons.
Outside of the Mets, no other National League East team has been able to capitalize on the Phillies recent slump. Florida is playing .500 ball, and surprisingly, it is Washington that is in third place in the division. Atlanta has lost nine in a row, and is having all kinds of trouble hitting the baseball.
This weekends series may not determine the winner of the East, with over 120 games left to play. It will, however, provide a measuring stick for two teams that are currently headed in opposite directions. Ironically, it is the Mets on the rise and the Phillies who are falling.
