MLB Betting Odds: Mets Core Faced With A Crossroads Season
The New York Mets have had one of the highest payrolls in baseball for the past several years. All that has guaranteed the team is lofty expectations that have not even come close to being met.
Now, for the first time in years, the Mets will enter spring training as an underdog. They not only are now considered a long shot to win the World Series, but they are also an underdog in their own division.
The pressure that has accompanied being the favorite the past couple of seasons has shown. The Mets had two straight years where they collapsed down the stretch, and then last year had injuries deplete what was looking like a competitive squad.
This year, the Mets are once again healthy. Carlos Beltran is their only major injury concern, and he should only be out for the first month of the season. Jose Reyes, perhaps the key to the Mets success, appears to be back at full strength.
Reyes had been the catalyst for a team that was one game away from a World Series appearance. he then led the team to first place leads in two consecutive seasons until falling apart in the season's last month.
The new year will be one of extreme importance for the future of the organization. The front office has held to their belief that David Wright, Beltran, and Reyes are the foundation for a championship team, but as of yet they have delivered zero titles to New York.
This core does not have to win the championship for this year to be considered a success. They do, however, have to show that they can carry the team to the playoffs and make a serious run without choking in September and October.
