MLB Betting Odds: Rays Look Real After One Quarter Of The Season
The first quarter of the Major league Baseball season is complete, and the Tampa Bay Rays hold the best record in the league. The rays play in the same division as the Red Sox and Yankees, but still some analysts believe that Tampa is here to stay.
The Rays have won in almost every way imaginable in the first quarter of the season. Their pitching staff has been one of the best in the league, and their young lineup continues to put up big numbers.
James Shields, David Price, and Matt Garza have anchored the staff, and Rafael Soriano has done exactly what the Rays front office envisioned at the back end of games. Last year, the Rays relievers were a major sore spot on the team, but this year the bullpen has been a strength.
Evan Longoria is putting up MVP-type numbers early in the year, and the rest of the offense has followed. Throw in the steady hand of manager Jim Maddon and the Rays have enough tools to stay in the American League East race all year long. Former manager Bobby Valentine even picked Tampa to win the division before the year began.
The Yankees look like the primary competition for the Rays these days. New York has come out of the gates strong, something that has not happened in the Bronx the past couple of years. Although the Yankees won a championship last season, they began so slowly that many fans were calling for Joe Girardi's job.
Boston was expected to be the team battling the Yankees, but they have not performed to their capabilities as of yet. Lately, the Red Sox have been heating up, corresponding with David Ortiz fighting his way out of a season-long slump.
