MLB Betting Odds Shuffle As Tejada, Oswalt, and Cantu Traded
The Major League Baseball trade deadline is this Saturday at 4PM. Several contending teams did not wait that long to pull off deals that they hope will propel them to the top of their respective leagues.
On Thursday, Roy Oswalt, Miguel Tejada, and Jorge Cantu were traded away from teams who have thrown up the white flag on this season. The beneficiaries of these deals were the Phillies, Padres, and Rangers.
Roy Oswalt was the biggest name available on the mound after Cliff Lee and Dan Haren were traded earlier this month. Oswalt was coveted by a handful of teams, but Philadelphia put together the best package for the ace starter. The Cardinals and Padres were rumored to get in late, but the deal with Philly had already been in the works.
Miguel Tejada is nowhere near the American League MVP that he once was. His presence in San Diego will serve more as a veteran presence who has been in some big games in his career. Tejada will likely move back to shortstop until the Padres infield gets healthy.
Cantu has already been on record as saying he wants to re-sign with the Marlins after this season. He will now have to do so as a free agent after he was traded to Texas Thursday. The rangers have been looking for a first baseman, and Cantu should fit well with the powerful Rangers lineup.
With two days left until the trading deadline, plenty of more trades are expected. A slew of relievers are on the market, and many teams are looking to sure up their eighth inning set-up positions in front of their closers.
The Padres, Phillies, and Rangers were already some of the favorites in the betting odds to win the World Series. The moves the teams made today should only secure their positions as favorites moving forward.
